From our apartment, it is a 10-15 minute walk downhill to Lake Millstatt. You can begin local walking routes directly from the apartment. Within a short drive is the starting locations of a huge variety of walking routes. They often start or finish at the mountain huts where you can eat local specialities. The hiking routes vary in difficulty and length. There are some routes where full hiking equipment is recommended, family routes which are easier for younger children and sometimes accessible with a pushchair, and everything in between. For general short leisurely hikes, decent footwear ie good trainers or hiking shoes are recommended at the minimum and a good supply of water and snacks.
